Vintage 50’s Glowing Amber Pheasant Feather Cloche Hat

This hat has been consigned with Hatfeathers by a family friend. The original owner has recently had to reduce her estate, so we are selling this hat, one of the few pieces of vintage she kept. This gives us a rare opportunity to pass on some of the background history of it.
The wonderful cloche style hat is covered entirely with pheasant feathers. The feathers are from the prize bird of a hunting trip taken by the owner’s husband the year before he died. He took the feathers from this handsome bird to one of the best milliners in town, and had this hat created for his wife from them.

The milliner used a black felted wool short cloche-shaped base with a shallow grosgrain edged brim around the front side. This base is all but completely covered, with just a small bit left exposed where the forehead would rest at the underside of the brim. The feathers are arranged by pattern, and blend nicely with each other. Many have that wonderful amber glisten that only pheasant feathers have, along with dark browns, cream, and mottled greenish gray.
The hat is lined with red faille fabric and trimmed with a grosgrain ribbon band. A tactile inspection of the lining will reveal the minimal yet effective stitches used to secure the feathers to the hat. They cannot, however, be felt when worn.
