Day dress, shirtwaist, sun dress and house dress are all terms describing those comfortable cotton dresses that have long been a staple item for many women’s wardrobes. The styles range from fancy dresses worn for social occasions to simple cotton frocks worn around the house.

These dresses allowed women the opportunity to wear something pretty yet comfortable and easy to care for. They could be made in a variety of styles from slim skirted during the war years to circle skirts in the fabulous 50’s. Fabrics range from solid colors to bright novelty and floral prints. The simple style allowed for easy creation by the home seamstress, while more experienced seamstresses and manufacturers often added such features as pintucking and embroidery to take the dresses to a new fashion level.

From the 40’s on through the 60’s, cotton dresses would be worn while the lady of the home went about her daily duties. They were lightweight, especially important in the days before air conditioning, and could be easily washed with soap and water at home, and hung to line dry.

Dressier styles were made, too. They were often worn as an ensemble, usually with matching hat, purse and heels for social occasions, church, or shopping. Dressy or not, the theme of easy care and “wash and wear” remained.
Modern designers often take influence from vintage and the day dress is no exception. Today the same basic style features of the day dress can be seen in modern designs. The need remains the same as it did 50 years ago: a cool and comfortable garment with a fun style that’s easy to wear.
Whether you are a die hard vintie or just want a fun and unique piece that isn’t your usual mall fodder, vintage day dresses are an excellent choice for the modern gal’s wardrobe. These fun finds can be dressed up with the addition of new or vintage accessories; they look great with a simple cardigan, and can be worn year round.

Hatfeathers Vintage has a variety of vintage day dresses available, with more being added each week all summer long.
