Harlequin Pattern Vintage 50s American Optical Calobar Sunglasses
What an amazing find!
These vintage sunglasses from the 50′s are by Calobar, a division of American Optical. They are ivory cream colored sturdy plastic with a wonderful harlequin print in red, white, green, and blue. The real glass lenses have a dark gray-green tint.
The fit is quite secure, almost tight on my normal-sized head, so they won’t blow off if a gust comes by you poolside. Have your optical professional adjust the tightness if necessary.
Glass lenses, no prescription that I can detect
Thick plastic (way better than modern glasses materials)
There are a few light surface scratches, nothing out of the ordinary for vintage plastic. I noticed a few pin-head sized marks on one of the four metal corner/edge diamonds. The metal hinges are in excellent working order and condition.
There does not appear to be any warping to the plastic, and they set evenly when laid on a table.
The glass lenses have a scarce few very light scratches, with one pinhead sized chip in the right lens. I couldn’t detect any of the scratches in my view when wearing the glasses.
